After picking a conservative Democrat with questionable environmental credentials for Secretary of the Interior, Obama has chosen Rick Warren to give the Invocation at his Inauguration. Maybe he’s trying to reassure the social conservatives that his taking power is not the end of the world. It’s hard to tell. Whatever his intent, the message he’s sending is that he shares Warren’s views at some level.
Update: Obama has come out and defended his choice, noting that he disagrees strongly with many of Warren’s views but saying that we must be able to “disagree without being disagreeable, and then focus on those things that we hold in common as Americans.” Perhaps so. I still disagree with Warren’s inclusion in such a symbolic ceremony, but I understand Obama’s reasoning.
