Israel's Cease-Fire Holding

Israel has finally bowed to world pressure and declared a cease-fire. This time, the cease-fire appears to be holding on both the Israeli and Hamas sides. This is of course after Israel attacked the U.N. headquarters in Gaza, murdered hundreds of women and children, and committed various other atrocities that caused even a jaded and war-weary world to scream “Enough!”

Even Israel’s largely successful blockade of all unbiased media from the war zone cannot hide their evil work from the world. No one seriously considers the output of Israel’s propaganda units to be a worthwhile source of war information.

Once again, I’ll repeat that the time for Israel’s existence, at least in its current location, is past. One can argue that it’s noble for a group of men to stand against great odds and great forces when the opposition is natural, as in an antarctic base or a moon colony, but the opposing forces here are human beings who just want to live their lives in peace with dignity, without Israel oppressing them, occupying their land, and murdering them. The Shoah, or Holocaust, was a tragedy that should never have been allowed to happen and can never be repeated, but any child knows that two wrongs do not make a right, and allowing Israel to torment and oppress its neighbors as it has ignores this simple truth.

Note that I am not suggesting that the Israeli people are somehow inherently bad, and I am not suggesting that Hamas and the other Islamic extremists are justified in what they do. Far from it. Hamas, specifically its rocket attacks against Israeli civilians, is the immediate cause of the current war. The Israelis are responding in self-defense, but they are doing so in a way that shows they value Israeli life on a vastly different scale than Palestinian life.

When a situation remains consistently inhumane for so many for so long, only a fool would continue to insist that the solution is to respond with more violence. My solution is to remove the offending population and offer them a home in a nation where they are welcome and will join many of their fellows in a life that demands only hard work to find peace and prosperity.

Obama almost certainly does not share my views on Israel, but I hope he quickly makes it clear that the United States will no longer support an Israel that openly occupies its neighbors’ land and oppresses the Palestinian people.
