“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” – Mahatma Gandhi
I am so disappointed that President Obama has chosen a Portuguese water dog from a breeder, when he could have set a shining example by adopting a dog from one of the many shelters who have these dogs available. He has betrayed the animal welfare movement and encouraged those who believe it’s okay to make money breeding dogs when the world has a surplus of these animals and many are killed because there is no one to care for them. It’s a shame that someone so full of good ideas would betray the fundamentally noble cause of animal welfare.
There is really no excuse for Obama’s snub of the many Portuguese water dogs available from animal shelters in favor of one from a breeder. He chose the breed because of allergies and we can all understand that, but he missed the chance to encourage compassionate and responsible animal ownership and instead showed the world that his circle of compassion extends only to the human species.
I hope Obama eventually realizes what a poor choice he made in taking a dog from a breeder, publicly acknowledges his mistake, and uses his position to promote animal welfare generally and to specifically encourage shelter adoption.
