A new fire inspection app for the iPad shows one way military personnel could use hand-held devices to improve combat effectiveness. This is definitely a preview of things to come.
Imagine a squad of soldiers assigned to clear a set of buildings that have become overrun with insurgents. Previously the buildings were surveyed in detail (inner walls and other structural supports) and other strong and weak tactical points were noted. The clearing team has this information available on a tablet and can dynamically plan how to assault each building based on its internal structure, taking into account where insurgents are likely to lay traps and attempt ambushes.
Makes me want to join the Army again … 🙂
