Astronaut Sally Ride’s partner won’t receive government death benefits because of our nation’s primitive fear and subsequent hatred of same-sex couples. Sally Ride is as great a hero as any we’ve seen in my lifetime, forging new paths for women and ensuring that young girls can aspire to be anything they want, with the assurance that only a successful pioneer can give. She devoted her life to popularizing science and showing young women that with enough talent and effort, not even the sky is a limit.
Denying Ride’s partner benefits because she happens to be a woman is no way to treat a national hero. This situation is a great example of why the US needs to get over its primitive fear of same sex couples.
